NaBloPoMo Day 2: New Hobby

I taught myself how to crochet a few years ago. This stemmed from my mother-in-law teaching the oldest child how to crochet. It's kind of hard for lessons to continue when your teacher is hundreds of miles away, so when my daughter had questions or got stuck, she kept asking me what to do. I didn't know, so I bought some books and we learned together. The oldest child has since lost interest in crocheting but I pick it up from time to time mostly during the colder months in the year. It's hard to crochet something with alpaca yarn, for instance, when it's 90 degrees outside.

A while back, last winter or so, I decided that I wanted to learn how to knit as well. So again, I bought a book and some beginner materials and gave it a go. From the book, I couldn't even figure out how to get started so I gave it up after just a couple attempts. Recently, I've been reading a series of books set in the 1700's where people, mostly women, did needle crafts not just to pass the time but because it's how they clothed their families. Reading these books gave me the urge to want to try knitting again. This time, I Googled "knitting help" and found some really great online videos which made all the difference. After just a couple days, not only have I been able to figure out the rudiments of knitting, but I've started my first project. It's just a simple beginner pattern, but it's coming along and I've only made one minor mistake that I'm hoping will only be noticeable to someone who knows what they're looking at, lol.

Now I cross stitch, crochet, and knit. The kids and the husband say my inner grandma is showing herself, but I like it and it's soothing to my mind. Besides, from what I've read, needle crafts are all the rage amongst 20 and 30 somethings. I can't wait to be able to knit socks. I love socks.

Here's the website I've been using for anyone interested. Knitting Help

  1. I love crochet! I tried to get into knitting several years ago. I even went to a class but I just can't seem to get interested. I think it's my desire for instant results and I just think crochet is faster than knitting in my opinion. Are you on Pinterest? there are TONS of awesome patterns on there for both crochet and knit. awesome awesome site. If you want an invite let me know.

  2. I've been trying to decide if I think crochet is faster than knitting. I haven't done enough to say. Crochet, at this point, seems faster because I'm more familiar with it but that's not a fair assessment.

I'm not on Pinterest but I just checked it out and it looks to be very awesome. I would love an invite! Thanks for turning me onto the site.

  3. I tried to knit once but I wasn't very good. Inmates can crochet anything. If they can do it, maybe I can try.

  4. Jennifer~~You should give it a go. Crocheting, IMO, is easier than knitting. If you have questions, you have inmates at your disposal to ask for help. ;) Or we could get together for a lesson, lol. We could be old ladies together and sit and crochet on the porch in rocking chairs.

  5. Carolynn are trying to knit. And we suck. We can't even get it started. It just keeps turning into a big knot. Inmates are smarter than me. Jerks.
